October is National Co-op Month

Every October, cooperatives across the United States celebrate National Co-op Month—an annual opportunity to spotlight the power of member-owned businesses to strengthen communities and drive economic growth. This year’s theme, “Cooperatives Build a Better World,” aligns with the United Nations’ designation of 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, emphasizing co-ops’ role in creating inclusive, resilient, and sustainable economies.

In Iowa, cooperatives are deeply woven into the fabric of everyday life. From rural electric and farm supply co-ops to credit unions and food retailers, more than 1.5 million Iowans are members of cooperatives. These organizations:

Support critical infrastructure and community development projects

Employ over 12,000 people statewide

Contribute nearly $60 million in property taxes annually
